Water crisis in Dr. Beyers Naudé cannot continue indefinitely

The Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality’s failure to reliably supply water to its residents is alarming and unacceptable.

Various towns, including Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda, Jansenville, Aberdeen, Klipplaat, Steytlerville and Willowmore, experience unreliable water supply on a daily basis.

These towns obtain their water from boreholes, but residents’ taps are frequently running dry due to the Municipality’s poor maintenance of borehole pumps and pipelines.

Residents have a constitutional right to safe and adequate water supply, and local authorities have a duty to ensure this in terms of expanded legislation.

Several statements by the Municipal Manager, Dr Eddie Rankawana, make it clear that the Municipality is unable to comply with this basic, legal requirement.

The harsh reality is that the water problem poses a significant risk to residents’ health and is detrimental to their quality of life.

The Freedom Front Plus requested the Municipality to urgently address the crisis and to provide a written plan of action to resolve it as soon as possible.

Residents have the right to know what is being done to resolve the water crisis, and the Freedom Front Plus will see to it that their right to quality water and reliable water supply is protected.
