Today’s political struggle in South Africa is inextricably linked to the heritage of future generations.
Just like every parent has the responsibility to ensure, through their words and actions, that their family’s and nation’s cultural heritage is kept alive and honoured, so every person has a duty and responsibility to safeguard and build the future of their country through political participation.
Heritage Day is often jokingly referred to as Braai Day, and that says a lot about the Afrikaner people, in particular: People who love fellowship. In fact, a braai fire is a tangible symbol of the Afrikaner culture.
Heritage, however, extends far beyond that.
It is about the responsibility to teach one’s children about their history, their background and culture – everything that they can and should certainly be proud of. And that is something primarily taught by parents in the home.
Likewise, every South African with a shared heritage deserves to be proud of the beautiful country in which they live.
Unfortunately, the ANC has torn this national pride down to the ground over the last thirty years. Millions of South Africans are unemployed and without hope, municipalities are collapsing and the country’s international image has been trampled underfoot.
Even the US Ambassador to South Africa, Mr Leo Bozell, has warned that government, through its actions and treatment of minorities, is once again earning the country pariah status in the eyes of the world.
This is tragic, because ordinary South Africans are not the losers that the ANC is modelling to the world.
South Africans have demonstrated, in various fields such as in sports, that they are, in fact, winners who can compete with the very best in the world. In addition, the country is blessed with abundant natural wealth and great potential.
Voters can unlock this potential and turn possibilities into a new reality by voting in the local government elections on 4 November.
It is our time to take control of our future. It is our time to put an end to the ANC nightmare. It is our time to create a proud heritage for our future generations.
