Polokwane: Further investigations into “ghost workers”

Thanks to continued pressure from the FF Plus, the Polokwane Local Municipality has launched further investigations into alleged “ghost workers” employed by the Municipality as well as the excessive overtime claimed by employees.

The party kept applying pressure in the various committees on which it serves to have the allegations thoroughly investigated and to bring the guilty parties to book.

The council decided during a special council meeting held in May this year to suspend both the chief financial officer, Mr Naazim Essa, and the acting director of Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mrs Mapula Mamabola.

The decision came after the forensic auditors Bowman-Gilfillan were instructed by the Municipality to investigate the allegations, and these two officials were implicated in irregularities.

The two officials will stand trial soon.

According to the Mayor, Mr John Mpe, the ongoing investigations form part of a performance management system that the Municipality plans to implement.

Although the FF Plus welcomes the Mayor’s announcement, it is unacceptable that years went by during which no steps were taken against corrupt officials who misled the council and did not act in residents’ best interests.

The FF Plus will keep a very close eye on the investigations progress to ensure that irregularities are not swept under the rug.
