After continued pressure from the FF Plus and the Kempton Park community, the police yesterday finally enforced an eviction order to move illegal squatters from Glen Marikana to Putfontein.
The FF Plus would have liked to see the eviction order enforced six years ago when the Johannesburg High Court ruled in favour of the landowner and ordered that the squatters must be removed from his farm.
The eviction order was, however, never executed.
Meanwhile, the residents grew from a relatively small group to about 3 000.
The police, private security companies and the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Metro Police started yesterday to dismantle squatter shelters and moving them to Putfontein.
The FF Plus welcomes the move and strongly condemns any illegal occupation of land.
In addition, informal settlements are not provided with services, like water and sanitation, by the Metro and pose a serious health and environmental risk – not only to themselves, but also to the residents of the surrounding areas.
