Free State Legislature paralysed by lack of professionalism

The Free State reached a new low today when the Provincial Legislature was unable to conduct a scheduled sitting due to the ANC’s blatant lack of professionalism.

The institution’s mace, which must always be present during sittings according to the Free State Legislature’s rules and ordinances, was locked in a safe and the responsible official is out of town.

An important sitting had to be cancelled due to this dereliction of duty.

As a result, the Free State will not have a mandate to vote on the Division of Revenue Amendment Bill during the sitting of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Wednesday.

It jeopardises the entire budgetary process and demonstrates the unprofessional manner in which matters are handled in the province.

The FF Plus insisted during a whips’ meeting that the incident should be thoroughly investigated and that disciplinary steps be taken against the relevant officials.

.The Legislature, which is tasked with, among other things, exercising oversight over the provincial government is supposed to set an example of professionalism and accountability. What happened today taints the institution’s credibility.

If there is one institution in the province that is supposed to function properly, it is the Legislature.

The Free State Legislature has declined over the last few months since the elections under ANC rule and reached an all-time low today. All because of blatant negligence.

This incident demonstrates the ANC’s utter inability to govern effectively, even in the most basic aspects of administration.

The FF Plus will continue to apply pressure to restore professional standards in the Free State and hold the government accountable for its failures.
