During the latest Johannesburg Metro Council meeting, the FF Plus was the only party that supported a proposal for the Council to debate all committee reports following portfolio committee oversight visits.
When councillors personally attend oversight visits by section-79 committees it is the perfect opportunity to observe problems or successes on grass-roots level.
These visits usually reveal how the various departments spend their capital and, sometimes, even their operational budgets.
This enables councillors to determine, after the oversight visits, whether the committee reports tabled to the Council are correct and true.
The FF Plus is of the opinion that there should be more transparency on municipal level, and it is regrettable that the FF Plus was the only party that supported the proposal for thoroughly debating oversight visit reports in the Council.
Not allowing such debates creates the impression that what councillors observe on grass-roots level should rather not be talked about.
The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on the Metro Council to ensure that all reports tabled to the Council, including oversight visit reports, are handled in the same way.
