The FF Plus has lodged a complaint with the police against mostly ANC councillors who vandalised council chambers during a recent council meeting of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging).
Tables and chairs were overturned, tablecloths were strewn on the floor and danced on, and water was poured over computers and cell phones. Some of the tables and chairs were broken.
Chaos broke out shortly before a motion of no confidence was to be tabled against the ANC Mayor, Sipho Radebe.
The motion was submitted in terms of the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA) because service delivery in Emfuleni collapsed under his leadership.
There is minimal service delivery, while residents now have to pay their outstanding water and power bills directly to Rand Water and Eskom; which means no revenue for the Municipality.
The Speaker, Sibongile Soxusa, tried in vain to call the meeting to order and she had to be escorted from the chambers by her bodyguards after being threatened by certain councillors.
The FF Plus will also lodge a complaint with the Speaker against the councillors guilty of vandalism.
According to the Code of Conduct for Councillors, a councillor may under no circumstances damage municipal property.
The FF Plus will not tolerate such conduct, especially not from office-bearers who fulfil a leadership role in society and ought to set a good example.
