The residents of the Matjhabeng and Nala Local Municipalities should not be punished for these Municipalities’ accrued water debt to the water supplier Vaal Central.
The FF Plus has taken note of Vaal Central’s plan to restrict water supply to these two Municipalities due to their outstanding water debt.
Matjabeng owes Vaal Central more than R6,7 billion, while Nala’s debt amounts to more that R390 million.
The FF Plus has informed the Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Teboho Mokoena, and will apply pressure on provincial and municipal level to ensure that these Municipalities fulfil their obligations to residents and the water supplier.
The Municipalities reportedly made payments to the water supplier after the FF Plus put pressure on both municipal managers.
The time has come to hold Free State municipalities accountable for their failures and to take steps against officials who are not acting in residents’ best interests.
