More than five years after the Nketoana Local Municipality made a resolution to move the garbage terrain in Lindley to another site due to health risks, it still has not been done.
In 2015, approximately R13 million was budgeted for the move, but the money has clearly not been spent on executing the project. Even today, Lindley residents still do not have proper garbage disposal services.
The existing garbage terrain does not comply with the legal requirements. The Municipality's actions are in effect unlawful as it did not move the garbage terrain and according to law, a garbage terrain must be situated at least 500m away from a town.
The FF Plus has lodged a criminal complaint against the acting municipal manager, Kido Nhlapo, in terms of the Waste Management Act. In addition to this, the Municipality was also charged with the fact that it is allowing raw sewage to end up in the Vals River.
During the FF Plus's visit to the Municipality, it became apparent that the Municipality's inability to maintain its sanitation services and infrastructure is directly related to the ultimate pollution of the Vaal River.
Although these problems started due to the previous municipal manager's poor management, the acting municipal manager cannot afford to drag his feet in this regard.
The FF Plus will keep holding the Municipality accountable and will keep fighting to ensure that residents get the quality service delivery that they deserve.
