Mogale City wants to use emergency fund to put out fire at landfill site

The FF Plus notes the Mogale City Local Municipality’s plan to apply to have the Luipaardsvlei landfill site in Krugersdorp declared a local disaster area so that the Municipality can gain access to its emergency fund to fight the fire at the site.

According to the Municipality, it will cost R9,5 million to obtain the earth-moving equipment needed for the task. The fire broke out on the 4th of June on the south side of the site.

Strong winds are fanning the blaze and large, black clouds of smoke are enveloping nearby residential areas. The smoke fumes contain carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide and organic substances. It also has a foul smell.

Social media is currently inundated with residents voicing their concerns about their health. Residents suffering from asthma and lung problems are among the worst affected.

The FF Plus warned the Municipality years ago that the landfill site is not being properly maintained, and that it is too large. The landfill compactor, which could not handle large volumes of waste from the outset, broke down in August this year.

The backhoe was also stolen. And the site does not have a single fire hydrant. Meanwhile, the refuse began to accumulate in large quantities.

The ANC’s mismanagement of the landfill came to a head with the fire, and now there is no other choice but to use the emergency fund to address the crisis.

The Municipality is legally required to ensure that landfill operations continue to avoid severe penalties. Fines range from R5 to R10 million. The Municipal Manager, Makhosana Msezana, is also at risk of receiving a prison sentence of up to ten years.

Moreover, procuring and hiring expensive machinery may not necessarily prevent a future fire.

The root of the problem is the ANC’s inability to manage the landfill site and the Municipality successfully.
