(Debate in Parliament on appointment of new Auditor-General)
The FF Plus supports the recommendation by the relevant parliamentary ad-hoc committee that the current deputy Auditor-General (AG), Tsakani Maluleke, should be appointed as the new Auditor-General of South Africa.
Given the high levels of corruption, state capture and serious management flaws on local government levels in South Africa, the Office of the AG serves as a critical line of defence for South Africa's fiscus. As a Chapter 9 institution, the AG's Office also plays a significant role in protecting the democracy in the country.
Apart from the fact that Maluleke will be the very first female AG, she is, in the FF Plus's view, also the best candidate for the position. The FF Plus served on the ad-hoc committee that conducted interviews with the candidates and made the recommendation for Maluleke's appointment.
During her seven-year term of service as deputy AG, Maluleke proved that she possesses the skills needed to head the Office and that she will act independently and in the best interest of the Office of the AG as well as the audit profession in general.
In light of the amendments to the Public Audit Act, which grants the AG more powers and responsibilities, it is important for the AG's Office to use these powers to ensure that tax money is put to the best possible use.
The term of the current AG, Kimi Makwetu, ends at the end of November and the FF Plus also wants to commend him for doing a good job.
