The dissolution of the Renosterberg Municipality (Vanderkloof, Petrusville and Philipstown in the Northern Cape) is a step in the right direction.
The Municipality is guilty of a long list of negligence and legal-technical violations, but frequent and long power outages as well as poor service delivery are the main reasons for the dissolution.
Renosterberg has run up more than R88 million in outstanding debt to Eskom as Eskom was not paid for the increase in power supply capacity to the growing town of Vanderkloof. As a result, load shedding was implemented with power outages lasting up to eight hours at a time.
Philipstown is burdened by poor management and with interruptions in the water supply that last for weeks in some cases. These interruptions are not caused by drought, as is the case elsewhere in the province, but by poor workmanship and a lack of maintenance.
In Petrusville, the location of the municipal main office, residents often get no response from officials when they report service delivery problems.
The entire community of Renosterberg can benefit from the FF Plus's knowledge and experience when the new council is elected for a period of administration.
If a competent administrator and a dedicated council are elected, the first step on the long and difficult road to recovery can be taken.
