FF Plus lodges criminal complaint about Matjhabeng sewage pollution and demands action must be taken

The chairpersons, Peter Abrahams and Stephan Pienaar, of two FF Plus branches in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, (Welkom, Virginia, Odendaalsrus, Riebeeckstad) have lodged a criminal complaint against the Mayor, Nkosinjani Speelman, for neglecting his duty as executive mayor to ensure that the Municipality complies with the Waste Management Act.

In terms of the Municipal Structures Act, it is the executive mayor's duty to ensure that service delivery is provided in a sustainable manner. The FF Plus previously sent an official letter to Speelman demanding that he must, in his capacity as mayor, take responsibility for the constant and blatant dumping of sewage in storm-water pipes and that he must take decisive action against it.

Speelman, however, did not respond to the letter and in the meantime, municipal workers are still pumping sewage water into the storm-water pipes.

The FF Plus holds the view that it is not only the officials who are implicated in the violation of legislation, malpractices and the pollution of natural resources who must be punished, but also the politicians under whose supervision it occurs.

The FF Plus demands that officials and politicians who violate legislation and fail to perform their duty to ensure that service delivery is provided and the environment is protected must be criminally prosecuted and treated in the same way as those who were implicated in the asbestos roof audit project.

Politicians and officials must not only be brought to book for financial offences, but also for the reckless management of scarce resources.
