Eskom's decision to implement so-called power punishment for the Northern Cape municipalities of Emthanjeni, Tsantsabane, Kamiesberg and Richtersveld will destroy the economy. The outstanding debt of these municipalities which includes towns like De Aar, Britstown, Hanover, Postmasburg, Garies, Kamieskroon, Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay, has prompted this drastic decision.
The irony of the matter is that it will once again be paying power consumers who are punished because municipalities are defaulting. Similar actions were put aside by courts in the past on these very same grounds.
Vanderkloof in the Renosterberg Local Municipality was burdened with power punishment for months on end last year and at the beginning of this year. It delivered a severe blow to the economy of this holiday town. In the meantime, that Municipality has been dissolved and on the 11th of November this year, voters have the opportunity to get rid of the corrupt ANC government on local government level. Next year, residents of all municipalities will have the same opportunity during the general municipal elections.
The main cause of this economic disaster is the ANC government that deployed incompetent, and even corrupt, cadres in these municipalities. The reasoning behind it may have been that the party would still retain their loyalty, but that they would do less damage on local level. Legislation, like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), was exploited for this. The reality proves, however, that the damage done by these cadres is enormous.
The FF Plus is looking forward to becoming part of a coalition government in every single Northern Cape municipality in 2021 so that the ANC's mismanagement can be turned around.
