The FF Plus has asked the MEC for Community Safety in Mpumalanga, Mr Vusi Shongwe, to be more proactive during Easter in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths on provincial roads.
A stringent traffic safety campaign ought to be launched.
Over the last few weeks, there has already been several serious accidents on Mpumalanga’s roads with a high number of fatalities. It is very alarming, especially because Easter, notorious for its death toll on the roads, is just around the corner.
Stringent speed control and other measures should be implemented to expand the campaign to informal settlements, in particular, as pedestrians walking along busy routes are frequently hit by vehicles.
Traffic officers should be more visible, and various traffic control points involving both police and traffic officers should be set up.
It will drastically reduce the risks associated with unroadworthy vehicles and reckless drivers.
At present, road safety in the province falls short. It is imperative that all roleplayers work together in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents, deaths and injuries on our roads.
The FF Plus will continue to pressure Mr Shongwe to ensure that the aforementioned suggestions are implemented.
