The blame for the incident in which a contract worker of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) was electrocuted and seriously injured while repairing a defective 88KVA cable must be laid at the door of the Municipality, which does not have a single qualified electrician in its employ.
The man, who suffered 80% burns on his body, is currently in a critical condition in the Sebokeng Hospital.
He was busy repairing a defective electrical cable at the Powerville substation in Vereeniging when someone presumably switched on the power supply to the line.
The FF Plus holds Emfuleni's administrator, Gilberto Martins, accountable for what transpired.
It is under his guidance that the Municipality decided to rather appoint 19 senior researchers, at a cost of R15 million per year, than to appoint properly trained and qualified officials to perform the necessary maintenance on critical infrastructure.
In an official letter to Martins, the FF Plus requested that the matter must be investigated and the report must be made public to determine exactly what happened.
The Municipality must take responsibility for what happened and take steps to appoint well-trained individuals.
