The culture of violence in South Africa is not only derailing the country, but also steering it towards anarchy and utter chaos.
The latest example is the murder of Reverend Danie Oosthuizen, a retired Dutch Reformed minister from Primrose East in Germiston, on 6 April – a tragic incident that once again highlights the rising wave of lawlessness and violence engulfing communities.
Such crimes not only cultivate a climate of fear, but also undermine the foundation of a stable society.
When citizens no longer feel safe in their own homes and communities, trust in the state and its ability to ensure safety is eroded.
South Africans need to seriously reflect on the future they want to create for themselves and their children. There needs to be a deliberate restoration of the country’s moral compass while promoting a culture of respect, responsibility and tolerance towards one another.
Violence and lawlessness simply cannot be normalised.
At the same time, criminal behaviour must be effectively combated through improved intelligence systems and proactive crime prevention. This would include, among other things, improving the identification, screening and qualification of workers before apppointment as well as intensifying law enforcement agencies’ steps against illegal immigration.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) believes that a strong political will, better coordination between law enforcement agencies and community involvement are essential to eradicating the culture of violence and restoring stability.
In this difficult time of loss, the Freedom Front Plus expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends and congregation of the deceased.
This tragic loss once again reminds South Africa that decisive action is needed to secure the country and its future.
