Stoffberg subway will finally be repaired after constant pressure from Freedom Front Plus

The Ekurhuleni Metro will finally start repairs on the dangerous Stoffberg subway in Brakpan following constant pressure from the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus).

The subway, which sees a lot of pedestrian traffic, including school children, as well as vehicular traffic, has been in a terrible condition for months with potholes, washaway damage and decaying storm water infrastructure. It has already caused numerous serious accidents, including a fatal incident in 2024 when a man drowned in his vehicle after the subway was flooded.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has been pressuring the Metro to address the problem since January this year because it poses a safety risk to many residents on a daily basis.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Lindiwe Mnguni, acknowledged during the latest council meeting that road users’ safety is a priority. She promised that the road and storm water system will be repaired by 30 April 2026, that temporary safety measures will be implemented and that the area will be monitored in the meantime, especially during heavy rains.

In the Freedom Front Plus’s view, doing the repairs is just the first step. The entire subway needs to be fully upgraded to ensure that the infrastructure is safe for permanent use by motorists and pedestrians, with no need to fear any damage or loss of life.

The Freedom Front Plus will closely monitor the repairs and hold the Metro accountable to the deadline of 30 April.

Residents are encouraged to continue reporting all road problems and to keep their official reference numbers. These numbers are crucial to hold the Metro legally accountable in the event of future damage, loss of life or legal action arising from infrastructure failure.
