ANC’s actions are driving South Africans apart

(Parliamentary debate on Freedom Day: United in our resilience to advance social and economic justice, and to defend South Africa’s democratic order and sovereignty)

The theme of today’s parliamentary debate on Freedom Day, i.e., that South Africans are united in their resilience to advance social and economic justice, and to defend South Africa’s democratic order and sovereignty is just an illusion.

The ANC has shattered this dream with its divisive actions and unwillingness to accept that it no longer holds majority support in the country, but governs alongside other parties.

This was clearly evident in today’s Freedom Day debate. In the past, these debates were characterised by a constructive and positive attitude, endeavouring to find common ground in the interest of South Africa.

In stark contrast, today’s debate was mostly destructive, though. It shows that South Africans are drifting apart. Besides, the debate’s theme sounds like a Soviet or East German slogan meant to obscure this reality.

South Africans are not united. Far from it. The ANC is openly attacking parties within the Government of National Unity (GNU) while South Africa’s economy is grinding to a halt.

This can primarily be attributed to the ANC’s failed economic policies and corruption.

According to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), 44 of Africa’s 54 countries have a stronger growth rate than South Africa.

Eleven of the top 20 countries in terms of economic growth are from Africa. South Africa is near the bottom of this list. In 1994, South Africa was the economic giant of Africa.

This should not come as a surprise, especially if one listens to the ANC Members of Parliament who are still pursuing a national democratic revolution and seek to impose the ANC’s failed policies, particularly on white South Africans.

The ANC continues to act as if it is governing alone. This approach spells danger for the GNU and South Africa. Others now also have a say, and it is time that the ANC realises this.
