The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes the disciplinary steps taken against 389 members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) who participated in an illegal wage strike on 19 March this year.
These members used government vehicles to block major routes in Ekurhuleni to voice their grievances.
Metro Police work is deemed an essential service, so, the members’ conduct violated the Labour Relations Act.
The members were required to surrender their firearms, vehicles, access cards and equipment pending the outcome of the subsequent disciplinary hearings.
While the disciplinary steps against the members is welcomed, it also means there are now 389 fewer Metro Police members to help maintain law and order in Ekurhuleni.
Their own violation of the law cannot go unpunished, though, and the Freedom Front Plus strongly condemns their conduct.
