Salary dispute in Emfuleni results in attachment of municipal vehicles

Service delivery in the Emfuleni Local Municipality was dealt yet another severe blow this morning when the sheriff attached a large number of vehicles in the Municipality’s fleet.

The attachment stems from municipal officials’ dispute with Emfuleni regarding their salaries.

Officials appointed on job level six have been promoted to a higher level, but due to poor planning, the Municipality does not have the funds to adjust their salary scales.

In fact, Emfuleni’s financial position is so dire that it is struggling to render basic services.

The Municipality’s unemployment rate currently stands at 56%, which means that its revenue is far less than what was projected.

Several businesses have had to close their doors due to financial problems, while others have moved to other municipalities with better service delivery. The result is a further drop in municipal revenue.

This attachment once again highlights the devastating consequences of the ANC’s mismanagement of once prosperous towns in the Municipality.

It also underlines the FF Plus’s view that vast municipalities, such as Emfuleni, should be made smaller so as to bring decision-making and service delivery closer to the people.
