The Limpopo province should urgently provide aid to the farmers who recently suffered severe losses owing to veld fires and black frost caused by freezing cold weather conditions.
The FF Plus has already sent an official letter about it to Limpopo’s MEC for Agriculture, Ms Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana.
Devastating veld fires and cold weather conditions wreaked havoc this past week in crop production areas such as Tzaneen, Vivo, Levubu, Marble Hall, Warmbad, Groblersdal and Apél.
The cold brought on black frost which severely damaged crops. Vegetable farmers were the hardest hit.
The FF Plus is calling on the MEC to meet with interested parties and agricultural organisations to determine the extent of the damage suffered by farmers. Providing financial aid to farmers who suffered serious losses should also be considered.
Like elsewhere, the agricultural industry is vitally important for the province. This industry not only ensures food security, but also offers job opportunities to thousands of people.
The FF Plus is of the opinion that the province should make emergency funds available to farmers, enabling them to remain in the industry.
