Allegations that the Free State Premier, Maqueen Leshoa Mathae, accepted a bribe from a contractor confirm the FF Plus’s suspicion that the Free State is being looted by a construction cartel.
The incriminating messages which made the headlines were initially shared on social media and implicate a contractor, Mr Patrick Phuti.
The FF Plus has already posed questions about the matter to the Premier in the Free State Legislature. The party will also request the Public Service Commission in the Free State to investigate the province’s tender processes with a specific focus on the role politicians play in awarding tenders.
Although the allegations are serious and should be investigated, the FF Plus is of the opinion that the social media messages should serve as the impetus for urgently addressing the underlying problem of tender corruption in the Free State.
For decades the Free State has been a tender landscape where the ANC exploit infrastructure projects to enrich themselves.
