The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in the Emfuleni Local Municipality hereby submits its formal objection to the proposed 2025/26 budget and tariff increases outlined in the public notice dated April 2025.
We strongly oppose the proposed tariff increases, particularly the steep 15,3% increase in water tariffs and the 10,74% electricity tariff hike. These increases are unjustifiable considering the current level of service delivery by the Municipality.
Residents are constantly plagued by:
• frequent water and electricity outages;
• inadequate refuse removal and sewer management;
• deteriorating road infrastructure; and
• a lack of transparency by the Municipality.
It is unacceptable to impose above-inflation increases on residents without first addressing persistent service delivery failures. Tariff hikes should reflect improved services and accountability – not cover incompetence and financial mismanagement.
In addition, many households are already struggling to keep up with the cost of living. These proposed increases will place even greater financial strain on residents, especially vulnerable communities and pensioners.
We urge the Municipality to:
1. reconsider the proposed tariff increases, and realistically align them with the current economic climate and service delivery;
2. conduct a comprehensive and transparent review of expenditure and revenue collection; and
3. prioritise improving service delivery and rebuilding public trust before increasing residents’ financial burden.
