The condition of the Westonaria Cemetery is unacceptable. Not only is it an eyesore for visitors, but it also poses safety risks as there is no visible security.
A recent oversight visit by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) revealed that graves have been vandalised, trees are growing through headstones, the grass stands knee-high and the paths between the graves are overgrown with weeds.
In addition, the gate at the entrance has been removed and there is no guard on duty to secure the premises.
Legislation compels municipalities to manage and maintain cemeteries, including fencing, gates, roads and drainage systems.
The responsibility of maintaining individual graves is the next of kin’s, but the Municipality has to maintain the surrounding premises.
The Freedom Front Plus asked the Rand West City Local Municipality’s Mayoral Committee Member for Sport, Arts and Recreation, Desmond Ndzipho, to ensure that the Cemetery is properly maintained and that adequate security is provided.
The party will conduct regular follow-up visits and keep the pressure on until decisive action is taken so the community can visit their loved ones in safety.
