Upgrades to Nooitgedacht pump station finally commence after years of issues

For years, the residents of Nooitgedacht in Bishop Lavis have been plagued by recurring sewage spills, which will hopefully be a thing of the past soon.

Homes and backyards were frequently flooded with raw sewage. It had a severe impact on people’s health, dignity and quality of life.

The problems at the Nooitgedacht pump station were caused by a combination of factors including cable theft, vandalism and the dumping of objects into the sewerage system, which resulted in recurring blockages and damage to the infrastructure.

After more than a year of constant pressure, talks and correspondence by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus), much-needed upgrades to the pump station are finally underway.

The Freedom Front Plus recently paid an oversight visit to the site with the Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, and several engineers from the City of Cape Town.

During the visit, the challenges on grass-roots level were explored, while there was personal engagement with the relevant officials and the worst affected residents.

The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the efforts to do upgrades, but will closely monitor progress. Nooitgedacht residents deserve a reliable sewerage system and should continually be kept informed of the improvements.

The party will keep the pressure on until all the problems at the pump station have been sustainably resolved.
