Water supply in Madibeng hampered by poor planning and mismanagement

Today during its briefing of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Magalies Water admitted that many of the delays in the completion of a water supply project in Madibeng (Brits, Hartbeespoort and Mooinooi) are caused by, among other things, the Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) frequent failure to pay contractors.

The project has been dragged out over ten years and R845 million has already been spent on it. Sandile Mkhize, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Magalies Water, also indicated that even if the project were successfully completed in 2024, the supply of quality clean water is still not guaranteed because of the decayed state of sewage treatment plants in the area.

To crown this already dire situation, it appears that the networks distributing water to households were not expanded or upgraded during this time either.

So, even if everything were to go to plan and the sewage treatment issues were also resolved, it will still not be possible to distribute clean water to residents. Thousands of people in the Madibeng area will still not have clean, running water. It is a disgrace.

This failure is typical of the incompetence and overall mismanagement flourishing under ANC rule.

Madibeng residents are now reaping the bitter fruits of an ANC government that puts its own interests first at the expense of residents and taxpayers.

North West deserves better than the ANC.
