Yesterday (17 September), the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) submitted a motion of no confidence in the Speaker of the Koukamma Local Municipality, Mr Dudley Maasdorp, for alleged misconduct.
On 11 September, during a public meeting in Joubertina, he reportedly brandished a firearm, threatened residents with violence and used abusive language.
According to reports, video recordings and community accounts, the incident turned into a chaotic street brawl.
Maasdorp’s conduct runs counter to the dignity, impartiality and integrity required of someone serving as speaker, and violates the Code of Conduct for Councillors as well as the Municipal Structures Act, which requires officials to act in good faith and avoid intimidation.
His actions, furthermore, undermine the Municipality’s credibility.
The Freedom Front Plus’s motion demands:
• That he be immediately stripped of his office in terms of section 40 of the Municipal Structures Act (which allows the Council to remove a speaker with a two-thirds majority).
• Disciplinary action.
• The election of a new speaker to restore the Council’s integrity.
Koukamma residents deserve a speaker who leads with respect and professionalism, not through threats and intimidation.
The Freedom Front Plus implores all political parties to endorse decisive action to restore public faith in the Council and demonstrate that no official is above the law.
