VF Plus says no to erecting a monument for Daveyton victims

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) was the only party in the Ekurhuleni Metro Council that opposed the ANC’s motion to erect a monument in a park for the Daveyton victims.

During the Daveyton massacre on 24 March 1991, 12 people were killed and 38 wounded when police members fired shots at a political gathering.

The motion also proposed that case studies be conducted of similar incidents, which may include street name changes.

The party is not opposed to erecting monuments or statues for the right reasons, but at the moment, the Ekurhuleni Metro simply does not have the funds to incur expenses for a motion that is purely politically motivated. Service delivery must come first.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Ms Bridget Thusi, herself said that the Council does not have the money needed for funding such projects.

The motion was, however, adopted despite the Freedom Front Plus’s objection.
