The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is calling on all Ekurhuleni Metro residents to play an active role in the upcoming public participation process on the Metro’s draft budget and Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the 2025/26 financial year.
The Freedom Front Plus is concerned by various aspects of the budget, which may have a negative impact on taxpayers and the Metro’s financial stability.
Severe tariff hikes:
The draft budget proposes the following increases: 17% for water, 11,32% for electricity, 10% for sanitation and 6% for refuse removal. Such sharp increases will put even more pressure on households that are already struggling financially.
Overtaxing paying residents:
With a collection rate target of 90%, the Metro remains dependent on a shrinking base of paying residents while revenue collection problems are not addressed.
Slow spending of budget:
Bi-annual reports show that only 58% of its operating budget has been spent and 62% of revenue has been collected, which raises questions about the accuracy of planning and the effectiveness of service delivery.
Public safety and infrastructure:
The party is pleased with the council decision to scrap the re-connection fee for stolen or damaged power cables, but the Metro should do everything in its power to prevent such crimes and protect infrastructure.
The Freedom Front Plus proposes the following:
• No increase in property taxes for 2025/26.
• Improved debt-relief and application processes for the indigent.
• A commitment not to take out any new loans over the medium-term revenue framework.
• Higher allocations for repairs and maintenance.
The Freedom Front Plus encourages all residents, community groups, entrepreneurs and civil organisations to attend public meetings, submit written comments and engage directly with council members during the participation process.
Together, we can ensure the Metro is held accountable and the budget reflects residents’ actual needs and priorities.
