The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes the approval of its motion for a property tax rebate for elderly residents of the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality.
This victory is a significant step towards alleviating the financial burden on the community’s most vulnerable members.
The motion, initially tabled by the Freedom Front Plus in January 2025, enables elderly property owners to apply for and receive discounts on their property taxes. It was approved during the council meeting where the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and related policies were also adopted.
The rebate applies to residents of Bethal, Charl Cilliers, Embalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda, Trichardt and Emzinoni. Applicants must be 60 years or older, the registered owner and occupant of the property, and may own only one property. Medically unfit individuals may also qualify, provided a valid medical certificate is produced.
Income-dependent rebates are as follows:
• R0 – R16 000: 100% discount
• R16 001 – R17 000: 80%
• R17 001 – R18 000: 60%
• R18 001 – R19 000: 40%
• R19 001 – R20 000: 20%
A further plus is that elderly residents who have not yet applied for the property tax rebate can do so before the 1st of each month and be eligible in the next billing cycle.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep fighting for the rights of the elderly and advocating for solutions to improve their quality of life.
