During a council meeting, the Tshwane Metro Council adopted a proposal from the FF Plus regarding the failed Ozone Generation and Dosing Facility project.
This project, which has cost the Metro R26 million, entails upgrading the electrical and mechanical components of the Rietvlei Water Treatment Plant.
The project commenced in 2008 and is still incomplete.
Instead of writing off the full amount and scrapping the equipment, the Council accepted the FF Plus’s proposal that the Metro’s Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) should thoroughly investigate the squandering of public funds and that these funds should be recovered, where possible.
The party further suggested that usable components should be recycled and reused, and that, if possible, damaged equipment should be repaired.
This decision is a victory for financial accountability and responsible management.
Writing off millions in tax money without considering alternatives to recover some of the funds is simply unacceptable.
