The Jacaranda FM Tumi Morake debacle shows that a new debate between the people of South Africa is needed

The Tumi Morake debacle on Jacaranda FM earlier this week points to the fact that urgent debates on history, race, culture and identity between the variety of groups and cultures in South Africa are necessary, says Jaco Mulder, FF Plus leader in Gauteng.

Mulder says that the talk show conversation on Tuesday morning with the activist Johannes “Sloet” de Villiers from Amsterdam about the boycotts of Steve Hofmeyr’s concerts abroad was undoubtedly a recipe for a racial uproar.

He adds that Tumi Morake, the fellow presenter, made a mistake with her racially-based statements, which offended and angered some of the radio station’s listeners.

The people of South Africa must create their own forum for debate and must no longer allow history books to be written with the purpose of self-gain and creating political propaganda. Every moment in history must be evaluated in the context of the time and each group’s experiences and perspectives need to be heard.

“The FF Plus will approach Tumi Morake in an attempt to re-create her mistake into an opportunity for debate for a better future,” says Mulder.
