More than 100 days after May’s devastating floods, residents of Middelplaas in the region of De Rust still do not have a reliable supply of potable water.
It is unacceptable that restoring water supply, a basic necessity, is taking so long.
Municipal officials from the Oudtshoorn Municipality and a contractor are working on site every week, but so far, the repairs are not offering a sustainable solution.
The same problems keep recurring, pointing to poor workmanship and a lack of accountability. Meanwhile, the costs continue to mount and residents are not receiving the service to which they are entitled.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) wishes to emphasise that water is not a luxury, but a basic human right. Middelplaas residents are bearing the brunt of a failing system. The Municipality should urgently conduct a thorough investigation, establish accountability and implement a sustainable solution.
The people of Middelplaas have waited long enough. Every day without access to potable water constitutes a violation of their rights, proving that the Municipality is failing to fulfil its basic responsibilities.
