Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs: Free State government must take responsibility for environment

(Budget vote debate in Free State Legislature)

The FF Plus wants to remind the Free State Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs that it must not shirk its responsibility towards the environment.

Most of the Free State's dumping sites do not comply with the minimum legal requirements and because of the government's incompetence and indifference towards the environment, valuable water sources, like the Vaal and Wilge Rivers, are being polluted by raw sewage, blood and waste from abattoirs and garbage.

The Nala Local Municipality (Bothaville, Wesselsbron) is pumping sewage into a field adjacent to an informal settlement. It is also polluting the groundwater.

The many complaints that the FF Plus has lodged with the Department are well documented, but serious complaints about the pollution of the province's valuable water sources cannot just be left at that.

The FF Plus has also lodged various criminal complaints against offenders, like municipal managers, but nothing came of those either.

The party welcomes the positive reaction that these burning issues evoked from the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy. The Free State provincial government must, however, also take up its responsibility and ensure on grass-roots level that the Free State's valuable natural resources are managed and conserved as effectively as possible.
