The Ekurhuleni Metro’s Department of Water and Sanitation is creating a serious health risk by failing to promptly resolve the sewage spill next to the B-field at Germiston Stadium.
Sewage started flowing past the sports field two weeks ago. The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) immediately reported the problem to the Department. A few days went by before officials visited the site and attempted to stop the spillage, but to no avail.
In the meantime, children continue to play on and next to the field, while large parts of the grass and adjacent track are contaminated by sewage. Athletes and rugby players also use the field, despite the persistent foul smell.
The Freedom Front Plus contacted the Department again on Monday, hoping that the matter would be handled with greater urgency. The Department responded by stating that a private contractor would be appointed to resolve the problem, but gave no indication of when this would happen.
The Metro’s tardiness should not be tolerated. Germiston Stadium (formerly known as the Herman Immelman Stadium) is an A-class facility where hundreds of athletes, mostly schoolchildren, train every week.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep pressuring the Metro until the sewage spill has been resolved and the premises have been properly cleaned.
If the matter is not urgently addressed, children and athletes will be exposed to serious health risks.
