Persistent pressure from the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) eventually compelled the Ekurhuleni Metro to step in and address the issue of illegal occupants who have settled in a premises in Beyers Park, Boksburg.
After constant appeals from the Freedom Front Plus, the Metro’s Waste Management Operations Division has confirmed that officials will visit the site today.
The site in question, situated on the corner of Bartlett Road and North Rand Road next to Builders Warehouse, has become a hotspot and source of concern. Homeless people have moved into the building lacking basic facilities and, consequently, rubbish started piling up, jeopardising both the cleanliness and security of the area.
The Freedom Front Plus submitted evidence to the Metro on 18 September, but received no response. The Division’s head, Victor Nesengani, only undertook to take action after mounting pressure from the party.
The party also requested the Metro to identify the owner of the building who should shoulder the responsibility of erecting fencing and maintaining it.
The Freedom Front Plus shares the view of Beyers Park residents: the Metro cannot wait and allow the situation to escalate and the premises to turn into a dumping site. Administrative referrals are a start, but decisive action is urgently needed.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep pressuring the relevant departments to act, while insisting on written feedback on the site inspection and steps to implement corrective measures.
Beyers Park residents deserve a clean and healthy environment, and the Freedom Front Plus will make sure that is what they get.
