Rustenburg councillors who support irregular appointments should be held liable for legal costs

The FF Plus insists that councillors in the ANC-controlled Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) should be held personally liable for any financial losses suffered by the Municipality as a result of unlawful or irregular council decisions.

Municipal legislation does stipulate that councillors could be held accountable.

On Friday, the FF Plus made it clear in a letter to the Speaker of the Municipal Council, Ms Lebogang Pule, that the party’s councillors will not accept accountability for any financial losses or legal ramifications possibly resulting from the irregular appointment of the Municipal Manager, Mr Ashmar Khuduge.

The Municipality is currently embroiled in a legal dispute about Mr Khuduge’s appointment.

The party already pointed out during a council meeting on 8 September 2023 that the appointment is irregular and in contravention of several procedural provisions of the relevant municipal legislation.

The FF Plus is the only party in the council that is on record for objecting to the appointment.

It now appears that the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Housing and Traditional Affairs in the North West, Ms Nono Maloyi, expressed the same opinion in a letter to the RLM Mayor in October.

This incident once again shines the spotlight on the consequences of the ANC’s reckless handling of tax money to achieve its cadre deployment goals at all costs.

The FF Plus will keep monitoring the processes to ensure that the relevant councillors are held accountable.

South Africans should unite on 29 May and use their votes to make sure that the ANC is removed from power and replaced by a coalition government of which the FF Plus forms an integral part.

With the ANC out of the way, we can restore and rebuild.
