Ekurhuleni residents should participate in public participation process on IDP and budget

The FF Plus is calling on Ekurhuleni Metro residents to participate in the public meetings about the revised Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and the draft budget for the 2024/25 financial year by submitting comments, thus contributing to the Metro’s advancement.

The IDP is a draft plan detailing the Metro’s projected growth and development for the next five years.

The public participation process on the IDP is the one opportunity, apart from the election of councillors, that Ekurhuleni residents have to submit comments on how the wards where they reside, and the Metro as a whole should be governed.

The IDP for 2024/25 is currently under review, so residents have yet another opportunity to submit comments on the drafting of a revised IDP.

It is, therefore, of cardinal importance that residents are informed of the amendments and are given the opportunity to provide their input.

As part of the public participation process, residents have the opportunity to attend meetings during which the amended draft IDP will be explained in detail, and residents will be able to submit comments, which have to be taken into account.

These meetings will take place from 9 to 19 April.

Here follows a list of some of the public meetings:

9 April 2024 at 18:30 : Boksburg: Reiger Park Community Hall
11 April 2024 at 18:30 : Germiston City Hall
11 April 2024 at 18:30 : Brakpan Sport Centre
12 April 2024 at 18:30 : Edenvale: Sam Hlalele Hall
12 April 2024 at 18:30 : Springs Supper Hall
15 April 2024 at 18:30 : Alberton City Hall
15 April 2024 at 18:30 : Kempton Park City Hall
15 April 2024 at 18:30 : Nigel: MacKenzie Hall
16 April 2024 at 18:30 : Benoni: Actonville Community Hall

A comprehensive list of scheduled public meetings and an explanation of how the public participation process works can be found at the following link: https://www.ekurhuleni.gov.za/campaigns/idp/.

Written comments can also be sent to: budgettips@ekurhuleni.gov.za. Written comments have to be submitted to the Metro before 19 April 2024.

The draft budget as well as the proposed IDP are available at all libraries, service centres and the Metro Council’s website: www.ekurhuleni.gov.za.

The FF Plus encourages residents not to view this process as nothing but a meaningless rubber stamp in terms of the Municipal Structures Act, as in the past, but as a golden opportunity for every resident to submit clear comments on how to improve governance of the Metro and all its wards.

This process is immensely important because at this stage, the Metro is without proper political leadership and its governance has been left in the hands of the Metro’s administration.
