Protest action not a solution to poor service delivery

It is unacceptable that the residents of informal settlements in Mpumalanga, who demand municipal services, resort to protesting as their first course of action.

They should, instead, contact the respective municipal councils or ANC leadership so that solutions to their problems and frustrations can be found.

Since the beginning of 2024, the residents of several informal settlements in the Mbombela, Bosbokrand and Govan Mbeki Local Municipalities have severely disrupted traffic flow on the province’s main routes.

Protesting residents block the roads with burning tyres and other dangerous objects.

This morning, protesters blocked the R37 road between Lydenburg and Mbombela for several hours.

The routes are usually rendered inaccessible for a number of hours, forcing motorists to find alternative routes to get to work.

The protesters are demanding municipal services, such as electricity, water and sanitation.

It is crucial to invite the leaders of these role-players to engage in constructive discussions where their grievances can be addressed and solutions can be found.

The main objective would be to prevent any further protest actions, which cause inconvenience and severe damage to both property and the economy.

The FF Plus is committed to proper service delivery. The FF Plus is also committed to building new infrastructure, maintaining existing infrastructure and delivering services.

This should happen without disrupting service delivery to loyal taxpayers and on condition that residents of informal settlements are willing to pay for services.
