New R28 route between Hillshaven and Vereeniging in terrible condition

The FF Plus has requested the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Jacob Mamabolo, to urgently investigate and report on the maintenance work that was conducted on the R28 route between Hillshaven and the N1 junction to Vereeniging.

The R28 is riddled with potholes and the tar surface is crumbling a mere two and a half years after it was re-built and re-opened with great fanfare.

The R28 was closed for 18 months until construction was completed in 2019.

Meanwhile, contractors were appointed to repair the potholes that started occurring shortly after the road had been re-built.

The repair work on the potholes does not last long and potholes are increasing at an incredible speed, so vehicles frequently hit these holes and damage their tyres.

In many cases, more than one tyre on a vehicle is damaged and then motorists are compelled to seek assistance, which puts them in danger. Some of the motorists who had no choice but to pull off next to the road to change tyres have been robbed.

The problematic situation is exacerbated when it rains and motorists are unable to see the potholes, some of which are up to 30cm deep.

Contractors using tax money to do substandard work that may claim people's lives must not be tolerated.

The FF Plus will also insist that Mamabola must join the party on an oversight visit to the route to witness first-hand what motorists must brave on a daily basis.
