Mogale City (Krugersdorp) speaker asks FF Plus and other opposition party members to leave council meeting

Earlier today, the ANC Speaker of Mogale City ordered the FF Plus and other opposition councillors to remove themselves from the council hall after an FF Plus Councillor, Amanda de Lange, pointed out to the Speaker that she wanted to approve a decision that did not comply with the Municipal Systems Act, says Jaco Mulder, FF Plus provincial leader in Gauteng.

During Monday’s meeting, the ANC-controlled council attempted to adopt an organogram that would affect the council’s budget without first following the required public participation processes.

The organogram forms an integral part of the council’s integrated development plan (IDP) and has to be supported by an absolute majority of councillors, but the Speaker tried to have it voted in with a simple majority.

“The ANC Speaker has been holding the Mogale City tax payers hostage since the August 2016 local government elections by way of a council that is controlled by a minority and that makes unlawful decisions.

“The standing rules of order according to which the council is governed, were neither adopted by the council nor promulgated. The FF Plus lodged a complaint about this with the Public Protector in 2017 already.

“The political will of the majority of voters must be restored as soon as possible by restoring the multiparty coalition,” says Mulder.
