Government wakes up to rot in Eskom too late

The government’s admission that Eskom’s financial problems could collapse South Africa’s economy is a case of too little too late because for years nothing was done about the obvious mismanagement and corruption that have driven Eskom to the edge of bankruptcy, says adv Anton Alberts, chairperson of the FF Plus.

Malusi Gigaba, Minister of Finance, and Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President and newly-elected leader of the ANC, this morning admitted that the situation at Eskom is a national crisis and that the Treasury simply does not have the money to bail out the power utility.

According to adv Alberts, it is mindboggling that the government has only now come to the realisation that Eskom’s financial problems can bring about a great crisis in the country.

“The government is only taking notice of the alarm bells now that the fire has nearly destroyed all of Rome. Eskom has been sucked dry by state capture and the plundering of state assets, particularly at state-owned entities.

“The FF Plus will request that a commission be appointed to do an investigation and determine who is responsible for Eskom’s deterioration and that the parties involved in irregularities will be prosecuted,” says adv Alberts.
