Minister Motshekga does see leeway for families to work together as regards home-schooling

The Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, responded to a question for oral reply by the FF Plus by saying that families can work together when it comes to home-schooling.

The question was posed seeing as home-schools are currently defined as children from a single family unit who receive instruction from their own parents. As soon as more than one family is involved, it is considered an independent school and must be registered as such.

The question was whether the Department will in the future provide more leeway for families so as to allow them to work together in a home-school setup.

Minister Motshekga answered that in her opinion, it is indeed allowable. Her Department cooperates well with various home-school associations and she will be happy to discuss the matter with them.

According to the FF Plus, this pronouncement is an important step in giving parents and communities control over their children's education.
