Memoriam cemetery – yet another sewage crisis on Mlamleli’s watch

The terrible condition of the Memoriam cemetery in Bloemfontein, in the Mangaung Metro Municipality, is but one example of many of the ANC's sheer inability to fulfil its mandate towards residents.

The sewage pollution next to the cemetery has become so serious that nearby graves are starting to sink into the ground. Thousands of litres of sewage are bubbling up between the railway and the cemetery and have, in effect, formed a sewage dam.

Due to the lack of oversight and maintenance, garbage bags and sewage water end up in a stormwater channel that runs through the cemetery. The garbage-and-sewage-polluted water runs into a natural tributary which ultimately flows into the Mockes Dam from where it is purified for human consumption.

Because there is no effective access control, the memorial walls at the cemetery have been broken open and looted.

Most of the graves are also overgrown because of the Metro's indifferent attitude towards maintenance.

The cemetery fell into this shameful state of dilapidation and the serious sewage pollution occurred on the watch of the former executive Mayor of the Metro, Olly Mlamleli. If the ANC re-elects her as mayor, it will serve as proof that the ANC has no regard for the environment or for the health of humans and animals and absolutely no respect for those who have passed away and their loved ones.
