Mbombela: FF Plus requests audit report on public entities’ outstanding rent

The FF Plus has requested the Mbombela Local Municipality to table a report to the council on the amounts owed to it by public entities for rent.

The latest municipal council meeting revealed that the ANC is running this Municipality (Hazyview, Nelspruit, White River, Barberton and Kaapschehoop) into the ground.

The adjustment budget and financial performance report were discussed during the meeting.

Government departments’ outstanding debt to the Municipality seems to be a runaway train. Municipal assets, such as buildings, are rented but the monthly rates and taxes are not paid on time. The departments’ debt burden to Mbombela is getting completely out of hand.

Several public entities owe the Municipality a total amount of approximately R212 million, according to written replies to questions by the FF Plus.

In addition, local businesses owe Mbombela approximately R170 million, while other outstanding debts include households owing R688 million and various other debtors that owe the Municipality about R11,6 million.

Although municipal management has indicated that its debt collection rate has improved, there seems to be no plan for dealing with the debt that other government structures owe the Municipality.

It simply keeps accumulating.

The FF Plus will escalate the matter to provincial level so action can be taken and solutions can be found.
