Mangaung: Court rules against opportunist councillors

The Bloemfontein High Court has rejected with costs the application brought by three ANC councillors to obtain an interdict to stop a meeting where the new mayor for the Mangaung Metro Municipality must be elected.

The FF Plus welcomes this decision. It is clear that there is a faction within the ANC that is afraid that their ANC colleagues will not vote in line with the instructions of the ANC structures of authority to re-elect Ms Olly Mlamleli as mayor. Thus, they attempted to stop the council meeting.

The applicants failed to add the political parties represented in the metro council to the application even though they have a material interest.

The applicants also intend to submit an application to have the meeting, where the decision was made with regard to the FF Plus's motion of no confidence, declared unlawful. The ANC councillors are arguing that it was unlawful to hold the physical council meeting during which the secret ballot on the motion took place.
According to the FF Plus, there is no reason to say that this meeting was unlawful.

The FF Plus submitted the successful motion of no confidence in good faith and the Speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana, acted in accordance with the lockdown regulations as well as the standing rules and orders.

The disaster management regulations do indeed make provision for physical council meetings to be convened.

Thus, true democracy did triumph.

It will be truly lamentable if the ANC does not make proper use of this opportunity to elect a more accountable executive mayor. The FF Plus will continue to act in the best interests of the people of Mangaung.
