Maluti-a-Phofung: Deputy president admits that intervention failed

During today's question-and-answer session in Parliament the Deputy president, David Mabuza, admitted that the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality (Harrismith, Kestell, Phuthaditjhaba) was removed from Section-139 administration too soon, which serves as proof that the Free State government has effectively given up on Free State municipalities.

Mabuza responded to a question by the FF Plus regarding the suspension of the Section-139 administration. He acknowledged that the Municipality is still not fulfilling its duty towards residents.

The problems at Maluti-a-Phofung are deeply rooted in maladministration, poor management, corruption and fraud and will not be solved overnight. Yet another task team, such as the one proposed by the Deputy president, will not save the Municipality from its dire situation.

There is no accountable political leadership in the Maluti-a-Phofung municipal council and municipal problems are only exacerbated by the ANC government that is unable to provide proper guidance or intervene successfully on provincial and national levels alike.

Thus, the FF Plus will keep insisting that this municipal council must be dissolved and that municipal boundaries must be reviewed to establish smaller, more sustainable municipal units.

It is unacceptable that the Free State government's Section-139 interventions come to nothing and that these interventions are often terminated for no apparent reason.

Paying residents get no value for their money and the Deputy president's feeble excuse does not hold water if there is no relief for the people on grass-roots level.
