The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) strongly condemns the torching of the house and belongings of a Limpopo farmer, Mr Karel Potgieter.
The farm is located in Munnik in the Sekgopa Modjadjieskloof District, approximately 50 km outside Polokwane/Pietersburg.
Mr. On 4 June, Mr Potgieter returned from the shops to find his farmhouse engulfed in flames. The house has been burnt to the ground.
Mr. For years, Mr Potgieter and his neighbours have been embroiled in a dispute with the local community, which successfully lodged a land claim on three neighbouring farms.
The Sekgopa community met with the remaining farm owners just three weeks ago, and demanded their land as well.
In the past, farm owners were threatened that they would be removed from the land by force.
The police have opened a case of arson. No suspects have been arrested yet.
This incident indicates that the land issue coupled with certain political parties’ inflammatory statements on the matter could be the spark that ignites the powder keg.
