The FF Plus asked during a recent Tshwane Metro Council meeting that the quality of the external legal firms used by the Metro should be put under the microscope.
The request follows a report by the Metro’s Corporate Services Committee which was tabled in the council on 30 November.
According to the report, a panel of 15 legal firms was appointed for the period from 1 June 2021 to 30 June 2022 and has not been reviewed since.
Out of a total of 108 court cases in which the Metro was embroiled, it was successful in only 21 and lost 74. A settlement was reached in 13 court cases.
The Metro had to shell out a staggering total of R1 569 968,49 for the 74 cases it lost.
This raises the question of whether these legal firms are competent to represent the Metro.
The report further indicates that five of the legal firms used by the Metro are not located within the borders of Tshwane.
The party is of the opinion that the Metro should rather make use of the services of local legal firms and that the current panel should, therefore, be revised.
